Sinosteel Corp. may build a natural gas-fired power plant to extend its ferrochrome capacity in South Africa beyond the current USD 450 million expansions. Mr Suwei Zhang CEO of ASA Metals said that its company will triple annual capacity to about 400,000tns by June 2009 and plans to further expand its plant near Polokwane by at least 120,000tns. He said that the additional capacity may use power generated from Mozambican gas. Mr Zhang said ASA's output of ferrochrome, used to make stainless steel will be unchanged at about 120,000tns this year after better maintenance management offset a cut in power use to 90% of normal consumption.
