China World Hotel
Beijing, China
23-25 April, 2007

Organiser: Metal Bulletin Events In conjunction with  Minmetals

China’s steel production has continued to expand and the implications are being felt by its neighbours in the Asian market. With such a large production capacity, the question remains: Is China gaining the maximum benefit from its powerful position?

China’s steel industry remains inhibited by fragmentation and over production. A move toward consolidation would improve profit margins, strengthen its position in raw material bargaining and ensure the long term sustainability of the country's steel sector.

A slow down in China’s steel demand growth from 20% in 2005 to 11% in 2007 is predicted by the IISI. Will the rush to expand capacity leave China oversupplied with steel? What impact will increased domestic production have globally when it appears on the export market?

The global market is changing rapidly. In 2006 we have witnessed the creation of a single company capable of producing over a hundred million tons of steel per year. Japanese and Korean mills are becoming closer aligned to avoid being taken over. Indian steelmakers are taking brave steps to make great progress.

Alongside these issues executives in the steel industry need to be well briefed on the unstable freight market, the opportunities to hedge risk from the arrival of steel futures and the potential for profit in added value steel products.

Metal Bulletin’s Far East Steel 2007 draws from our unique resource of international journalists, consultants and event producers to design a programme with the most relevant, interesting speakers tackling the paramount industry challenges. Each year we gather international delegations of top level decision makers from the leading companies in the steel industry.
